Not your usual vacation destination, Puerto Rico is a little island located in the Caribbean. The island has a dense population, unique history and is very multicultural. Diversity is present in the geography also. This three-thousand five hundred and eight square mile island is home to coastal plains with world renown beaches, a plateau in the northern region and a mountainous interior region.

For the nature lover, there are many things you’ll want to check out and experience while you are in Puerto Rico. Both the water and the land are home to unique features of the island. It is home to one of the few naturally bioluminescent bodies of water in the world that radiates each and every night. There are two bays in Puerto Rico where you can experience this particular occurrence can be seen in the water.
Underground you will find one of three largest cave systems in the world. The Río Camuy Cave Park in Puerto Rico is home to the only cave that has a river that flows through it. The part that is open to the public is served by a tram, so don’t worry about hiking in or out.
Back above ground, you will find the only rainforest in the United States National Forest System, a result of Puerto Rico being a US territory. The El Yunque Rainforest is the home to about 230 species of trees. And they do have a beach or two. Luquillo Beach is a picturesque example of a West Indies beach with its crescent shape and palm tree lined shore.
Historic Attractions
Puerto Rico is home to two ancient forts. They are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are listed as National Historic Sites with the United States Park Service. The construction of Fort San Cristóbal was begun in the 17th century. This fort covers 27 acres and is on a cliff over-looking Fuerte San Felipe del Morro. the other historic fort. The foundation for this fort was laid in 1539, but it was modernized as recently as World War II when the US government added a section on top of the existing structure.
The Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory isn’t ancient, but it is historic in the sense that it is the largest observatory of this type on the planet. You can interact with the exhibit and learn about the functionality of the Telescope. You will find a viewing platform from which you can observe the actual telescope.
You can also find The Bacardi Rum Distillery, which is another of the “world’s largest”. Bacardi is one of the largest family owned spirits companies in the world. Take a tour just so that you can sample their beverages.
Another must see is the Hacienda Buena Vista, which is a working coffee plantation today, but a touring the grounds is also like stepping back into the past. This living museum of the 19th century has antique furnishing and machinery. If you enjoy living museums or the time period or even coffee this will be an interesting visit for you.

If that isn’t enough, there’s still Toro Negro Forest where you can hike the tallest peaks in Puerto Rico, Cerro La Rosa and Cerro PuntaCerro La Rosa and Cerro Punta, the two tallest peaks on the island.
